What the evidence says
- Starting rates are modest. A third-party read of Upwork postings puts the median at $29.50/hr across 1,308 AI-automation jobs, with most between $20 and $40 (Upwatcher). Those are posted budgets, not pay someone received.
- Upwork's own research: freelancers doing AI work earn 34% more per hour (Upwork).
- Big agency figures are outliers:
- AEO Engine: $157,959 MRR, verified via Stripe (TrustMRR).
- Nick Saraev: $72,000/month, self-reported.
- Neither tells you what a beginner earns.
